Newcastle Airport is only a 30-minute drive from the city centre. It offers various amenities, including short and long-term parking, several cafés and restaurants, and services for disabled passengers. It's accessible by two bus companies. Port Stephens Coaches connect the airport to Newcastle train station and Nelson Bay, accepting credit cards and Opal cards for payment. Hunter Valley Buses, on the other hand, serve routes to Maitland, Raymond, and Stockton, accepting cash and Opal cards. Note that Opal cards can't be purchased at the airport. As for taxis, they are available 24 hours a day at the taxi rank right outside the terminal. Uber and Didi are other good alternatives.

Unless you are a New Zealand citizen granted visa exemption on arrival, you will need to obtain a visa prior to visiting Australia. Citizens of all European Union countries, as well as Andorra, Norway, Iceland, San Marino, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and Vatican City are eligible for an eVisitor visa, which can be applied for online. For citizens of the United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, South Korea and Malaysia, the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) entry permit is available, which can be applied for online and grants holders the right to enter Australia an unlimited amount of times for stays of no longer than 3 months per visit. Newcastle's coastal location generally means a rather humid climate. Air and ocean temperatures are the warmest during late March, early April and September. If you are looking to avoid holiday crowds, visit Newcastle in March.

Newcastle's public transport network is extensive and consists of buses and ferries. There are numerous ticket types to choose from. There are timed tickets, Travel passes, Excursion tickets, Concession travel tickets and ferry tickets. Most tickets can be used on both buses and ferries. You can also purchase an Opal card, the smartcard ticketing system used to pay for travel on public transport, online or in the Newcastle area. Additionally, the light rail line is a convenient way to get around Newcastle's city centre. Trams run every 8 minutes from 7am to midnight on weekdays, and every 15 minutes on weekends.

Uber and Didi operate in Newcastle. You can also book a taxi by calling a taxi company. At night, secure taxi ranks can be found at the intersection of King and Steel Streets and on the Wharf Road.
