Wisconsin Dells is situated in four different counties: Adams, Columbia, Juneau and Sauk in South-Central Wisconsin. It takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a glacially formed gorge that has striking sandstone formations that are still part of boat tours in the area. It was in 1856 that Wisconsin Dells, then known as Kilbourn City in honor of the local railroad’s president, was incorporated. In 1931 the town’s name was changed to Wisconsin Dells. The town changed its name to Wisconsin Dells in 1931. Logging was the original industry, but tourism took over after the first bridge was built in 1850 and railroad service started, connecting visitors to the area. The shift to tourism marked the beginning of the town’s growth, and the rest is history.
