Cozumel International Airport (CZM)

Cozumel International Airport (CZM)

Cozumel International Airport (CZM) serves both international and domestic flights, offering easy access to the island. Upon arrival, travelers can reach the city center via taxis, private and shared shuttle vans, or private minibusses, which can accommodate 4-10 passengers. Taxis are readily available, and while many drivers accept both Mexican pesos and U.S. dollars, it's recommended to carry small denominations of pesos as many taxi drivers do not accept credit cards. It's advisable to agree on the fare with taxi drivers before starting the ride to avoid misunderstandings.

Passport/Visa

Citizens from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union can visit Mexico without a visa for tourism, business, or transit purposes. Visitors from Japan, Australia, and New Zealand also enjoy visa-free entry. However, nationals from some countries, such as India, China, Russia, South Africa, and the Philippines, do need to obtain a visa prior to their arrival in Mexico. Since entry requirements can change, it's always a good idea to double-check the latest information with the nearest Mexican embassy or consulate before planning your trip to ensure you meet all necessary requirements.

Tourist Tax

Tourist Tax

As of January 2025, the state of Quintana Roo, which includes Cozumel, has implemented a visitor tax known as the "Visitax." This tax applies to all international tourists over the age of 4 entering the state. The current tax amount is approximately 271 Mexican pesos (around $13–14 USD), though this can vary slightly due to exchange rates. Tourists are required to pay this tax before their departure from Mexico, and proof of payment must be shown at the airport. The payment can be made through the official Visitax website. Additionally, cruise ship passengers visiting ports in Quintana Roo will have to pay an additional US $5 fee starting in 2025. Please note that tax rates and regulations are subject to change, so it's advisable to check the latest information before your trip.

Ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel

The fastest way to reach Cozumel from Playa del Carmen is by ferry, with several companies operating regular routes throughout the day. Ferries typically depart nearly every hour, with the ride taking around 45 minutes. Two main companies, Xailing and Winjet, provide this service. For a faster option, Ultramar offers a luxury ferry that cuts the travel time to about 20 minutes. While the ride is shorter, the luxury service comes at a slightly higher price. Ferry schedules can vary depending on the time of year, so it's a good idea to check departure times in advance. It's also recommended to arrive at the terminal 30 minutes before your departure to ensure smooth boarding, especially during busy travel periods.

Taxi

Taxi

Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation for cruise passengers traveling between the port and downtown Cozumel. Fares are relatively affordable, especially when compared to other countries, and are determined by specific zones rather than distance. Since 2016, all taxi drivers are required to present a fare list before accepting passengers. Taxi stands are readily available just outside the cruise terminal. Notably, rideshare services like Uber and Lyft do not operate on the island.
