Velika Planina mountain plateau features a unique landscape, interlaced with hiking trails and herdsmen's villages. The herdsmen of the ’Big Pasture Plateau’ maintain their traditional way of life. In summer, they move their cattle up from the valley and live in charming wooden huts with shingled roofs. Velika Planina is accessible year-round by aerial cable car from Kamniška Bistrica Valley.

The Kamniška Bistrica Valley is surrounded on all sides by peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and is the starting point for treks into this mountain range. The aerial cable car also takes visitors from the valley to the famous Velika planina mountain plateau. The natural attractions in the valley include the main source of the river Kamniška Bistrica, the smaller Mali Izvirek spring, the Veliki Predaselj and Mali Predaselj gorges, and the Orglice waterfall.

The Ljubljana Marshes, an area of wetlands and peat bogs, are known for their prehistoric pile dwellers and diverse flora and fauna. The archaeological heritage of these pile dwellers, displayed in museums in Ljubljana and Vrhnika, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Activities at the Ljubljana Marshes include exploring nature educational trails on foot, cycling along quiet roads and gravel paths, swimming in the Podpeško lake, and bird watching at the Iški Morost Nature Reserve.

Polhov Gradec, a charming village nestled beneath the Polhograjski Dolomiti hills, is renowned for its namesake mansion, hiking trails, and excellent local cuisine. The Polhov Gradec Mansion, dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries, contains two museum collections. Nearby is the Dormouse Forest Park, an educational trail for families. Hiking to nearby hills like St Lovrenc or Grmada provides stunning views from their summits.

The Geoss Adventure Park, located in the village of Slivna near Vače, features seven different climbing routes of varying difficulty levels, all set among the treetops. The easiest route is suitable for children aged four and above. The park also offers unique overnight accommodation in the form of sleeping platforms and hanging beds in the trees.

Bogenšperk Castle, once the residence of the renowned explorer and polymath Johann Weikhard von Valvasor (1672-1692), dates back to the 16th century. The castle's museum collection is dedicated to Valvasor's legacy and the history of the castle itself.

The Technical Museum of Slovenia, with its extensive collections of technological heritage, is located in the former Carthusian monastery in Bistra near Vrhnika. The museum's collections span various fields and display a wide range of historic machinery. Highlights for visitors include fifteen luxury limousines used by the former Yugoslav president Tito, an extensive exhibition on printing, four reconstructed mills, and a nature trail surrounding the museum.

Krvavec ski resort, located just 25 kilometres away from Ljubljana, offers around 30 kilometres of ski runs at 1,450 metres to 1,971 metres above sea level. A special ski bus connects it to Ljubljana on a regular basis in winter. In summer a variety of activities are available there including a treetop climbing adventure park, mountain biking, downhill karting courses and hiking trails.
