Whether it’s an award-winning gourmet restaurant, a trendy eatery, international cuisine or a traditional apple wine pub, Frankfurt has something for every taste.

Classics include, amongst others, the famous apple wine, which is served in a "bembel" (a blue-grey stoneware jug) and drunk from a special ribbed glass. Apple wine pubs typically serve the popular beverage with frankfurters, green sauce or "handkäs mit musik", little round cheeses marinated in vinegar and chopped onions. Most of the traditional apple wine taverns are located in Sachsenhausen.

The Freßgass, the city's culinary main street, offers a wide range of cafes, restaurants, bistros and delis lining both sides of the street.

In Frankfurt, many different food markets take place during the week. Several parts of the city have their own market, which is organised at least once a week. There, you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and dairy produce, flowers and many other products.

Kleinmarkthalle, a 1,500-sq/m indoor market hall, is a culinary paradise beyond compare. Some 156 market stalls sell all kinds of fresh foods, produce and flowers. Aside from the many regional specialities available, such as Frankfurt's famous "Green Sauce", visitors will also find a superb assortment of international delicacies, imported from the four corners of the Earth. Those feeling a bit peckish are urged to try some of the delicious specialities on offer right away, freshly prepared on site.

Alt-Sachsenhausen, with its apple wine pubs, historical half-timbered houses and narrow alleys, stands for Frankfurt cosiness and hospitality. No sojourn in Frankfurt is complete without a quick visit for a glass of the renowned “Frankfurt Ebbelwei”.

The menu offers a wide variety of traditional German food such as schnitzel, pork knuckle, Rindswurst (beef sausage) with sauerkraut, homemade Bratwurst and much more.

Another good place to try the famous apple wine is at the Dauth Schneider. You can find it in a cellar down a cobblestoned street. German and international food including seasonal specialities are served here. Enjoy dishes such as grilled spare ribs with sauerkraut, boiled beef with Frankfurter green sauce, Frankfurter sausages, Wiener Schnitzel and much more.

Find yourself in a comic-themed interior and enjoy a “Moonshiner” or “Dirty Pain” burger at Heroes. It is located right next to the bustling Berger Straße with its many food and shopping options and offers one of Frankfurt’s best burgers. In the summer, you can sit outside and enjoy one of the burger creations alongside a cold beverage.

Granted Aroma does not look like much at first sight, the usually long queue proves you wrong. The little kiosk serves probably the best falafel in town and many other (non-)vegetarian options. After ordering, you receive a numbered bottle top and can pick up your food when the number is called out by one of the friendly employees.
