Varna Airport (VAR)

Varna Airport (VAR)

Varna Airport (VAR), Bulgaria’s third-largest airport, is located 10 kilometres from the city centre near the town of Aksakovo. It serves Varna, Golden Sands, and northeastern Bulgaria, with its busiest season running from late May to early October. To reach the city centre or Golden Sands resort, take Bus #409. The journey takes under 20 minutes to the city centre and around 50 minutes to Golden Sands. Buses depart from the station in front of Terminal 2 Arrivals, and you won't have to wait longer than 15 minutes. Tickets can be bought on board, and real-time updates on bus arrivals are available. Alternatively, Triumf Taxi cabs (yellow) are available outside Terminal 2. Car rental companies also have desks in the Terminal 2 Arrivals area.

Passport & Visa

Passport & Visa

Citizens of European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries do not need a visa to enter Bulgaria, only a valid ID. Many other countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Australia, and New Zealand, benefit from visa-free entry for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Visitors from visa-exempt countries must hold a valid passport and, starting in late 2025, will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) authorisation online before travelling. For those requiring a visa, such as travellers from some Middle-East, African or Asian nations, a Schengen visa must be obtained prior to arrival. All travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least three months beyond their intended stay.

Best Time to Visit

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Varna depends on your preferences. For beachgoers, summer (June to August) offers warm temperatures averaging 27°C, though it’s also the busiest and most expensive period. Spring (April to May) is perfect for exploring historic and scenic sites, with milder temperatures around 22°C and fewer crowds. Of course, the sea will still be pretty chilly in spring, only going up to 16°C in May. Autumn (September to October) provides a quieter experience, while winter (December to February) sees temperatures drop below freezing, with many attractions closed. For a balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds, spring and early autumn are recommended.
