Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)
Lake Tahoe does not have a major airport of its own. The closest airport is Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), located about 97 kilometers away, which is a 45-minute drive to Truckee or about 1 to 1.5 hours to South Lake Tahoe. It offers direct flights from over 20 cities across the U.S., including Atlanta, Chicago, and New York. From Reno, travelers can reach Lake Tahoe via rental cars, rideshare services (Uber and Lyft), or the convenient South Tahoe Airporter shuttle service, which runs several times daily.
Another option is Sacramento International Airport (SMF), located about 193 kilometers (2 hours) away from Lake Tahoe. This airport offers more direct flight options than Reno but a longer drive.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lake Tahoe largely depends on what activities you're interested in. Winter (December to February) is ideal for skiing and snowboarding, as the area boasts world-class ski resorts. However, this is also peak tourist season, so accommodation prices are higher, and popular spots can be quite crowded.
For outdoor enthusiasts, summer (June to August) is the prime time for hiking, boating, and beach activities, with long, sunny days and pleasant temperatures. Summer also brings lively events and festivals like the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and Concours d’Elegance Wooden Boat Show.
Overall, spring and fall are perfect for budget-conscious travelers seeking fewer crowds, while winter and summer are best for those focused on skiing or lake activities and festivals.

Public transportation in Lake Tahoe is limited but can be somewhat useful for tourists, especially those without a car. The Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART) provides bus service around the North Shore, connecting key areas like Tahoe City, Incline Village, and Truckee. TART operates year-round and is convenient for visitors accessing ski resorts, beaches, and popular attractions. There is also a free TART Connect shuttle service that runs in certain areas during peak seasons. On the South Shore, Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) offers bus routes connecting South Lake Tahoe to major spots, including Stateline and ski resorts.
Having said that, ride-sharing apps, rental cars, and shuttles are often more flexible for visitors.
