First enjoy the latest underground exhibition at KIT (Kunst im Tunnel) and then sip at a cocktail or cappuccino in a café overlooking the Rhine. Naturally, you can do the latter without the former. The “Hüftgold” is vintage – a café that would have sat nicely in Bohemian Paris at the turn of the century. None of these sterile Ikea DIY kit cafés with faux leather armchairs, but a former service station with all the charm a corner garage has to offer.

You can’t simply walk past this ice cream parlour in Flingern – it already has a cult following. Once a petrol station, 50 types of ice cream are now made here, including some flavours that you would never even have guessed existed. Colourants and artificial ingredients are strictly prohibited here. When you’re there, sample the “Puristen-Teller”. It has just two ingredients: fresh straw berries and tonka bean ice cream.
