A favorite daytrip destination from Costa Maya, the Chacchoben Maya ruins are located nearby a city of the same name only 50 minutes away from the cruise port. This fascinating landmark is estimated to have been inhabited since as early as 1000 BC, and after a fairly late discovery in the 1940s, it still contains several unexcavated areas. Visitors can pick from a range of tour operators to be guided through the site, and as a bonus can admire the remarkable flora of what is called the "Region of the Lakes."

Although entry into the shrine is allowed to Hindus alone, visitors of any religious denomination can marvel at the 30-metre-high golden gate (gopura) towering right next to the Fort. The sizeable structure is among the world's richest in terms of valuable metals and precious stones used in its interior decor. Its early origins remain steeped in mystery.

Explore ancient lush green rainforests on the Cubo de la Galga hiking route. Beginning on the LP-1 highway in the east of the island, the starting point is easy to find. The route is 12km long and suitable for all experience levels. However, be warned that parts of this verdant, subtropical jungle are especially steep and slippery. Intrepid adventurers should choose the longer route, which connects to La Galga Mountain, and the viewpoint at San Bartolomé.
