The Palatine Gates date back to ancient Roman times, when they provided access for travellers coming from the north. Today, the gates are part of the archaeological park located in the city centre, together with other ancient ruins, such as the remains of a Roman theatre.

One of the most famous temples in the city, as well as home to Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. The temple features colourful decor and is believed to help make wishes come true upon request, which partly explains its popularity. Also, don't miss out on the structures of the temple which represent the five Chinese elements, along with other areas of the complex, like Three Saints Hall and Good Wish Garden that are elaborately decorated.

Vila Baleira, Porto Santo’s main town, may be small in size, but it makes up for it with charm and character, and you can easily explore the historic centre in about an hour or so. Start near the old pier, a favourite spot for locals, and take in views of Porto Santo Beach and the hills in the distance. From there, wander through the town square and past buildings with traditional Madeiran architecture. Around the square, you’ll find several of Vila Baleira’s key sights, including the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the town’s main church, the town hall, and the Casa Colombo Museum. The latter is well worth a visit if you’re interested in learning more about the island’s maritime past. Cafés and restaurants nearby offer a chance to sit back and watch the world go by.

Hard to miss and easy to like, the Stuttgart City Library is a massive white cube just a short walk from the main station. Step inside and you're in a vast, white space that feels more like a sci-fi film set than a library. Books line open balconies around a light-filled atrium, everything quiet, clean, and geometric. Head to the rooftop for a surprisingly good city view, or grab a coffee downstairs and just take it all in.
