Considered the main attraction in Monastir and the best place to get a glimpse of ancient Tunisia, the Ribat built in 796 has been periodically renovated and reinforced to maintain its integrity and striking appearance. The oldest part of this defensive stronghold is situated around the lookout tower, which was built to locate enemy ships on the horizon. Visitors can climb the old watchtower for some expansive views over the city and visit some of the other more recent structures, such as prayer rooms that were added during the centuries following its inception. Film buffs might be interested to know that the Ribat has been used several times as a set for international movies such as Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' and 'Jesus of Nazareth'. Admittance to the fortress as well as the museum where some ancient artefacts are displayed is fairly inexpensive and well worth it.

Åland has a shoreline numbering an incredible 17,000 km. Beaches lie in all directions. The mildness of the maritime climate and the contrast between calm bays and strong winds creating powerful waves outside the islands mean ideal kite surfing conditions. According to the local kite surfing professional, Patrik Larsson, Åland boasts at least 150 days of good surfing conditions annually. In the summer it's best done on the waves, and in winter in open water further away from the shores. Kite surfing is popular on Åland. Civico Planetario Ulrico Hoepli is the largest and oldest planetarium in Italy, offering a space where people can learn about astronomy and science. Inside the 20-metre wide dome you can watch projections of the night sky. Experts are always on hand to explain about the stars and planets. The planetarium offers a host of events and shows some of which are thematically tied to current events and pop culture such as spooky Halloween shows and lectures about the science in sci-fi films.

When you want to escape from the busy city streets and enjoy some natural beauty of Lombardy, consider hopping on the scenic Bernina Express train. Stroll along Lake Como, make a stop in the historic lakeshore village of Varenna and ascend the Alps on the UNESCO-listed train — it'll make a stop on top so you can take a short walk enjoying summit views. The iconic red train starts its journey from Tirano — a sleepy town close to the Swiss border, about 3 hours away from Milan.
