The archaeological site of Pupput is often empty of visitors - those arriving early in the mornings may find themselves one-on-one with the scant remains of a former settlement and some rather well-preserved - for the time being, at least - Byzantine mosaics.

The palace’s skewed arch stretches over the steps, creating a covered passage that feels both intimate and theatrical — a favourite backdrop for artists and Instagrammers. Even though often busy with visitors, the spot retains a quiet magic, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sit on the steps with a coffee, and watch as the city’s history unfolds in every shadow and angle.

One of the most famous attractions in North East England is the majestic 20-metre tall Angel of the North. The statue was created by Antony Gormley from 200 tons of steel and is seen by millions of people every year. The monument is located in the south of the city.
