Nestled in the peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, Phou Si Mountain (at 100 metres) shows off exactly why it is rightfully referred to as the heart of this charming city. The jewel in the crown of the summit is surely the 24m gilded stupa called That Chomsi, built in 1804 and famous with sunset junkies that accept the alluring challenge of climbing the 355 steps to enjoy the view of the beautiful city lying below their feet.

As Port Zante is located right in Basseterre's city centre, getting there by ferry or taxi is relatively easy. There are also mini vans called "route taxis" If you are going to Port Zante in a route taxi, look for one that has "Basseterre" written on the front sign. Once you board the minibus, you can tell the driver that you want to go to Port Zante. The minibus will drop you off at the bus terminal in downtown Basseterre, and from there it's just a 10-minute walk to Port Zante. You can ask locals for directions or follow the signs to the cruise ship terminal. Sitia is the best ‘ambassador’ for East Crete: authentic, uncrowded and picturesque. It can be an ideal base for the exploration of the easternmost parts of the island, including the popular Vai Beach, home to Crete's biggest palm forest. Originally founded by the Minoans, the tranquil seaside town is known for its lovely harbour, featuring colourful boats, several eateries and a beautiful promenade. The MacRitchie Nature Trail is a series of boardwalks that vary in length and take you through the tropical rainforest. The TreeTop Walk — one of the park's main draws — is a suspension bridge that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the forest below. On your walk, you will definitely see some monkeys. They are definitely cute, but can be a little naughty, especially if you are carrying any food.
