The Marienplatz is the heart of Munich and the site of the world-famous Glockenspiel. Daily, at 11am and noon, and additionally in summer at 5pm, the mechanical dancers in the tower of the New Town Hall come to life when the clock chimes. The building’s neo-Gothic facade is a favourite background for souvenir photos. Climb to the top of the 85-metre tower for a beautiful view of the city.

The Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum is home to the world-famous Terracotta Army, built to protect China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in the afterlife. Crafted more than 2,200 years ago, the army consists of thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, chariots, and horses, each with distinct facial features and expressions. The incredible level of detail and preservation means that, even after over two millennia, these warriors still stand guard over their long-deceased ruler.

This magnificent Romanesque church, lying at the very heart of Poitiers Old Town, has become the landmark of the city. It features beautiful biblical carvings on the outside, as well as statues from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Roman Thermae are the largest ancient public building ever uncovered in Bulgaria and the fourth-largest Roman baths in Europe — a considerable claim for a site sitting quietly in the southeastern corner of a modern city. Built in the late 2nd century AD across more than 7,000 square metres, the complex served as a social hub as much as a place to bathe. You can clamber freely around the chambers and pick out surviving elements of the underfloor heating system. Remarkably, the baths were in use for little more than a century before the cost of upkeep proved too much for a declining empire.
