The name has Arabic origins and means archipelago, referring to the group of islands Mafia is made up of. The area was under German control in the late 1800s, but its early history dates back to as early as the 8th century. Apart from ancient landmarks, the place is home to the first marine park of Tanzania — Mafia Island Marine Park. With coral reefs and wildlife such as whale sharks and sea turtles, it is a true snorkelling paradise. Home to the fames Ras Kisimani and Utende beaches.

The UNESCO World Heritage town hall of Bremen was built between 1405 and 1410 in a Gothic style. It's one of the greatest testaments to north German architecture with its façade ranking amongst Europe's most impressive. Inside, the Upper Hall showcases a series of paintings depicting stories from Bremen's past and models of warships suspended from its ceiling. Additionally, the cellars of the town hall are home to the largest collection of German wine hidden in its vaults.

For experienced divers, the Manta Reef — also known as Rangali Madivaru — is a must-visit diving spot. Once underwater, divers will find themselves at arm's length from the majestic Manta rays, some reaching 3 metres in size. Visitors to the area must carefully follow instructions given to them, so as to minimise the damage done to the reef.
