This charming little community garden hidden away in the city centre is full of interesting designs and innovative landscaping managed by local volunteers. It is the perfect place to sit and read a book, relax with some friends or stroll through enjoying the tranquillity. The project started as a way of bringing local residents together to enjoy the area and renovate previously derelict spaces. The common now hosts gardening workshops, activities for children and various markets throughout the year.

Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art is Mexico City's quintessential art museum where you get to see the genius of Rufino Tamayo plus whatever temporary exhibition is on at the moment. Rufino Tamayo was one of the most renowned artists of the second half of the twentieth century who sought to create paintings in "the Mexican tradition" while distancing himself from the political and nationalist movements. Another big draw of the museum is the brutalist building itself, designed by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky who drew their inspiration from pre-Hispanic architecture. The core of the Museo Tamayo's collection consists of more than 300 works by 170 artists. The collection includes examples of the most renowned artists of the second half of the 20th century.

Built in the mid-18th century for the Qing emperors as a retreat from the heat of the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace is a vast imperial garden centred on Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, both man-made. The lake was modelled on Hangzhou’s West Lake, with islands, bridges, and long covered walkways. Scattered around are pavilions, temples, and a recreated riverside street designed to look like a traditional market town. Later restored under Empress Dowager Cixi, it became her favoured residence. Today, it’s worth visiting not just for the palaces themselves, but for the long lakeside walks, shaded courtyards, and the sense of space that feels very different from central Beijing.
