Although no tours are offered inside Al Alam Palace, the building, which serves as the ceremonial residence of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq is still a must-see on your Muscat itinerary. Perched gracefully against a backdrop of rugged hills and adjacent to the picturesque Mutrah Corniche, the palace's striking façade is a feast for the eyes. You can wander around its grounds to marvel at its intricate exterior and lush gardens. Adding to the grandeur, the palace is flanked by two imposing 16th-century forts, Al Mirani and Al Jalali.

However, the current church is actually the third iteration, as both previous cathedrals were destroyed by fires in 1721 and 1802. Named after the 4th-century bishop Severin of Cologne, St Severin is a Lutheran parish church in Keitum, constructed in the Romanesque style and first documented in 1240. Step inside and you might be treated to the choir's melodic tunes.

When the tide recedes, mud flats are exposed allowing you to walk between islands. Trekking across the Wadden Sea is so evocative that it has even got its own verb, Wattwanderungen (mudflat hiking). However, in order to avoid the quicksands and the tides, you must go with a guide.
