Near Dubrovnik there is the archipelago of thirteen larger and smaller islands and islets known under the common name of the Elafiti. Among them, the three inhabited islands are of particular interest. Starting from Dubrovnik westwards these are Kolocep or Kalamota, as it is called by the locals, Lopud and Sipan. Inaugurated in 1890, the Arriaga Theatre is a Neo-baroque opera house named after the Bilbao-born composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, often referred to as the 'Spanish Mozart'. Inspired by the Paris Opera House, it became a key cultural venue in Bilbao. The original theatre burned down in 1914 and was rebuilt, reopening in 1919. Today, it hosts opera, ballet, classical concerts, and theatre productions. Guided tours give a behind-the-scenes look at the staircases, Royal Box, and costume collection.

In the 19th century, Corinto was a central element in the first projects by the Nicaraguan government to construct rail lines in the country. As a result, León and Corinto were among the first cities connected by rail, with the port as the terminus of the line. In today's Corinto, a well-kept locomotive bears witness to that era, standing adjacent to the Museo Municipal, where further relics are on display.
