In the heart of Chiang Mai lies Wat Chedi Luang, a massive, ancient Buddhist temple, dating back to the 14th century. It boasts a towering chedi (stupa) that once soared to greater heights before succumbing to an earthquake in 1545. Despite its partial collapse, the grandeur of Wat Chedi Luang continues to mesmerise travellers, who flock to marvel at its intricate architecture and serene ambiance. As the sun casts golden hues upon its weathered stones, visitors are transported to a bygone era, where whispers of history and spirituality intertwine, leaving an indelible impression on all who wander its sacred grounds.

This is a beautiful medieval structure, first built at the end of the 13th century, and the subject of many additions and alterations over the years. Head up the stairs in Piazza IV Novembre and into the Sala dei Notari – completely covered in allegorical and biblical frescoes that date from the 13th century. Entering the palazzo from Corso Vannucci takes you to the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria and to two further rooms: the Collegio della Mercanzia and the Collegio del Cambio. The Collegio della Mercanzia is beautifully panelled in wood, probably done by German craftsmen in the 15th century. The Collegio del Cambio has two rooms, the second with stunning late 15th century frescoes by Perugino.

The Orange Vélodrome is where the official football club in Marseille, Olympique de Marseille, is based at. Attending a football game here is a lot of fun thanks to the lively atmosphere created by cheering locals, and will likely prove enjoyable even if football isn't exactly a passion of yours.

For fans of "The Lord Of the Rings" trilogy or "The Hobbit" movies, Matamata village is an essential must-visit. Here, you can experience Hobbiton first-hand and feel like one of Tolkien's characters for a moment. The village is an estimated 2 1/2-hour car ride from Auckland, but the journey is worth every minute and you can take breaks on your way there, to simply marvel at NZ's beautiful and diverse landscape.
