Shimokitazawa, lovingly abbreviated to Shimokita, is a celebrated bohemian enclave just a few stops from Shibuya. It offers a distinct, relaxed counterpoint to Tokyo's central intensity. The neighbourhood is roughly divided into two distinct vibes. The south side buzzes with restaurants and nightlife, while the north offers a more laid-back atmosphere for browsing and coffee. Despite ongoing gentrification, Shimokitazawa retains its creative, slightly scruffy spirit, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon hunting for vintage treasures before settling into a cosy bar for the evening.

Just next to Lu Xun Park, you'll find Qingdao Underwater World, also known as the Marine Products Museum. Covering 7,300 square metres, this aquatic wonderland houses an impressive 4,000 tonnes of water and showcases a diverse range of marine life. It's the kind of place where you can explore everything from colourful fish to fascinating sea creatures, all under one roof.

At Deserta Island, also known as Ilha da Barretta, you have the rare opportunity to spend a day on an uninhabited island. Enjoy peaceful white-sand beaches with crystal blue water. Arrive either by boat or water taxi and do not forget to bring water. As there is only one restaurant on the island, it is also a good idea to bring a snack.

Technology lovers should not miss the quirky Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technical Museum. Named after the Dewan of Mysore, its five main galleries include a variety of different displays, from a replica of the Wright brothers’ 1903 flyer to virtual-reality computer games.
