This is Porto Santo’s most popular walk, though it rarely feels crowded, especially if you go first thing in the morning. The well-marked PR1 trail is around 5 km return and threads through the island’s northeastern hills, crossing a protected Natura 2000 area where you can spot native plants, wildflowers, and seabirds. The route is moderately challenging, with some steady climbs, but nothing too demanding for anyone used to hill walking. The reward comes at the viewpoints. Terra Chã looks out over rugged cliffs and deep blue water, while Pico Branco, the island’s second-highest point, offers wide 360-degree views across Porto Santo and the Atlantic beyond. The whole hike typically takes under three hours at an easy, unhurried pace, and at the top, you'll find a few picnic areas if you want to recharge before heading back.

All the cultural relics excavated from the Three Gorges area and other historical collections of the original city museum are housed here. With high-tech facilities, the museum vividly displays the geologic features, species, changes in local culture and customs, as well as models of the massive Three Gorges Dam Project.

At Desert Memorial Park Cemetery, you can visit the gravesites of famous Rat Pack crooner Frank Sinatra and 70s singer Sonny Bono, of the duo Sonny and Cher. As this is a cemetery, please be respectful of the dead and behave accordingly.

Xiamen Botanical Garden is a lush escape from the city’s hustle. Home to over 5,000 species of tropical plants, the garden weaves together picturesque winding paths, ponds, and rock formations in a setting that feels both serene and expansive. There are also themed areas such as the Bamboo Forest, Bonsai Garden, and Rose Garden. The Xiamen Botanical Garden is the kind of place where you can wander aimlessly, discovering hidden corners and marvelling at the diversity of plant life. If the city buzz is starting to wear on you, an afternoon here offers a refreshing reset.
