This church, located few minutes away from the city centre, has great historical importance since it was here the 1989 revolution began, when Father Lászlo Tökés spoke out against the regime, bringing people onto the streets to resist the attempts to arrest him.

“Żwirownia” is a 3.5 ha water reservoir with a sandy beach of 20 acres. The bathing area is located at a short distance from the reservoir. During the summer season “Żwirownia” operates from 10:00 to 18:00, then the swimmers are under lifeguards’ watch. There is also a mini playground for children and a volleyball court on the beach. You can rent water equipment, such as kayaks and water bikes.

Gulangyu Island, just a quick five-minute ferry ride from Xiamen, is a living museum of 19th-century trade and culture. Once a hub for merchants and diplomats, it became home to grand mansions built by Chinese and foreign traders taking advantage of Xiamen’s open port status. The island’s car-free streets are a joy to wander, weaving through colonial-style villas, leafy gardens, and striking architecture that blends European and Chinese influences. Ferries can get busy, especially on weekends and holidays, so booking your ticket two to three days in advance is a smart move. Once you’re there, take your time exploring the quieter corners, enjoying the local seafood, or visiting attractions like the Piano Museum or Sunlight Rock for panoramic views.

Sozopol, one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns, lies 35 kilometres south of Burgas and is easily accessible within an hour’s drive. Divided into the Old Town and New Town, it offers a charming atmosphere with cobbled streets, Greek (and Greek-inspired) architecture, and traditional Black Sea Revival-style houses. The Old Town is basically a museum-reserve, featuring over 180 historic homes, art galleries, and the archaeological museum, which houses relics of Saint John the Baptist. Beyond its historical heritage, the town is known for its beaches, architecture, and the annual Apollonia Arts and Film Festival in early September. Sozopol’s rich history, dating back 7,000 years, blends with its modern cultural scene, making it a standout destination for a day trip.
