These lavish gardens were constructed in 1694 as a residential retreat for Mitsutomo, the second Lord of the Owari clan. Sadly, however, most of the garden and its buildings were destroyed during World War II. The restoration took a long time, with the garden being finally opened as a public park in 2004. If time permits, visit the adjacent Tokugawa Art Museum, the third oldest private museum in Japan, which miraculously survived the World War II air raids.

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary in Navasota (approximately 30-40 minutes from Montgomery) is dedicated to rescuing and providing lifelong care for wolves and wolfdogs that cannot be released back into the wild. Many of these animals come from difficult backgrounds, but at the sanctuary, they receive the loving, compassionate care they deserve in a stable, nurturing environment. Saint Francis also focuses on educating the public about the challenges facing wolves and wolfdogs, while dispelling common myths about these incredible creatures. The oldest market in town is held at Petaling Street in Chinatown. Vendors begin peddling their wares already in the morning, but the market reaches a true fever pitch as the sun goes down. Haggling is a must and so is tasting the cooling longan drink at the corner stall.
