Knez Mihailova Street is the pedestrian area that unifies Belgrade's beautiful architecture. It leads to the Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park on one end, and to Terazije and the iconic Terazijska česma drinking fountain near Hotel Moskva on the other, offering a splendid view of the Sava river valley. Inside tip: Take a detour to Kosančićev venac, the oldest part of Belgrade outside the fortress. This charming elbow-shaped street is home to Princess Ljubica's Residence, the Building of the Patriarchate of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and the Cathedral Church of St Michael the Archangel, all of which are sure to captivate you with their elegance.

Home to many timeless works of art such as 'Girl with the Pearl Earring' and 'The Goldfinch', the Mauritshuis Museum showcases the Dutch Golden Age of painting in all its splendour. Amongst others featured in the museum are both Rembrandt and Vermeer, two of the most celebrated master painters of this momentous time in Dutch history. In their work, they are able to capture the essence of the Netherlands as a global powerhouse and one of the most prosperous nations in Europe throughout the seventeenth century. Be aware that some of the better-known paintings are occasionally sent around the world to be presented in other art exhibitions so it is advisable to check ahead of time to see if they are on display.

Nagoya Castle is where the Tokugawa shogun made their home for over 250 years up until 1868, the year in which Japan’s partial isolation from the West came to an end with the beginning of the Meiji period. The castle was nearly destroyed in bombing raids of 1945 and authentically rebuilt only in 2018.

Yanagibashi Central Market is home to over 400 shops and fish stalls, dating back to the Edo era (1603–1868) and second in size only to Tokyo’s giant Tsukiji Fish Market. Giant tuna, octopus, shrimp and many other varieties of fish are on sale here from early morning (around 6 am is best).
