The island's north holds one of its most scenic spots at the le Maido summit, where stunning views over Reunion's west coast unfold before the eyes of enthralled visitors. To avoid madding crowds and possible weather changes, head to the summit early in the morning on a clear day.

This national historical monument has a strategic location which was settled in the Celtic and Great Moravian periods. The architecture of the massive rectangular castle with four corner towers was mostly influenced by reconstruction works during the Gothic and Renaissance periods and during the reign of Maria Theresa. In 1811, it burned down and was then reconstructed in the 1960s.

Museum Ostwall is a modern and contemporary art museum with a permanent collection boosted by temporary exhibitions. One of the styles of art that the museum focuses on is Fluxus, which is the connection between art and life. You can expect to see works by expressionists Dieter Roth, Martin Kippenberger and Anna and Bernhard Blume. They also showcase an impressive collection of works by the Russian Alexei von Jawlensky.
