This is Porto Santo’s most popular walk, though it rarely feels crowded, especially if you go first thing in the morning. The well-marked PR1 trail is around 5 km return and threads through the island’s northeastern hills, crossing a protected Natura 2000 area where you can spot native plants, wildflowers, and seabirds. The route is moderately challenging, with some steady climbs, but nothing too demanding for anyone used to hill walking. The reward comes at the viewpoints. Terra Chã looks out over rugged cliffs and deep blue water, while Pico Branco, the island’s second-highest point, offers wide 360-degree views across Porto Santo and the Atlantic beyond. The whole hike typically takes under three hours at an easy, unhurried pace, and at the top, you'll find a few picnic areas if you want to recharge before heading back.

Founded in 1670, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the world's oldest and most respected scientific gardens in the world. Its beautifully landscaped grounds offer a serene escape with a rich collection of plants, from a world-famous rock garden to colourful rhododendron displays. The splendid Victorian Palm Houses are a major highlight, housing exotic flora (entry fee applies). A second key attraction is the modern, eco-friendly John Hope Gateway, which features exhibitions on biodiversity and sustainability. More than just a park, it's a living institution of global significance, perfect for a peaceful stroll or deeper exploration.

Take a stroll along the Nervión River starting at Palacio Euskalduna Jauregia, Bilbao’s modern conference and concert centre. The riverside path is lined with sculptures and impressive contemporary buildings. You’ll pass the Guggenheim Museum and cross the Zubizuri Footbridge, which connects the museum with the Ayuntamiento. It’s an easy, scenic walk that blends art, architecture, and city life in one route.
