Gabhla is one of the lesser-known islands. Long uninhabited, interest was revived recently, particularly among rock climbers and birdwatchers. An off the beaten track walk brings visitors to a lake with abundant bird life; cormorants, razorbills, guillemots as well as gannets and kittiwakes. Somewhere this peaceful, you may feel as though you've been transported to another world - but the island is in fact only 2km from Gweedore, with ferries departing from Magheragallan (Machaire Gathlan). Note: during low season, booking is required.

Located west of Newcastle, this region is home to many of Australia’s top wineries, most of which are centred around Polkobin, although Cessnock is the area’s main town. The main attraction here is visiting the wineries and tasting the locally-grown fruits. There is no public transport between the wineries in Hunter Valley, so your best bet would be to hire a tour company.

Even though he was born in Brooklyn, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt was educated in Limerick and wrote the book "Angela’s Ashes", which is about his childhood in both cities. His old school is now a museum, and a classroom from the 1930s is stored inside.
