If you don’t want your visit to Oman to revolve solely around souqs and mosques, make sure to include the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve in your itinerary. This archipelago, located off the coast of the Wilayat of Seeb and the State of Barka, consists of nine islands forming a protected marine reservea, natural wonder often overlooked by visitors. The best way to explore the islands is on a day trip from Muscat. Tour companies operate from Muscat Harbour, offering 40-minute boat rides to the reserve. Because access is strictly regulated to preserve its ecosystem, visiting with one of these licensed operators is the only way to go. The Daymaniyat Islands are among Oman’s most beautiful spots, perfect for snorkelling and diving in crystal-clear waters. The islands are also home to migratory birds, turtles and many marine species.

The historic forts of Al Jalali and Mirani date back to the 16th century. Although closed for entry to the general public, they define the cityscape of the Omani capital. The forts were formerly used as defence fortresses and were constructed by the Portuguese during the colonial period. Come at sundown to capture the best views.

Nakano provides a distinct experience for visitors interested in Tokyo’s specialist subcultures. Less central than Akihabara, this neighbourhood draws a more knowing crowd of enthusiasts. The district serves as a central point for otaku culture, a Japanese term for people with dedicated, often deep interests in areas like anime, manga and video games. Its primary attraction is Nakano Broadway, a multi-level mall from the 1960s that houses a dense collection of specialist shops, including the flagship Mandarake complex, selling vintage toys, comics and collectables. Access to the mall is through the Nakano Sun Mall, a covered shotengai (shopping arcade) filled with everyday shops and eateries. In recent years, Nakano Broadway has also developed a parallel reputation for its concentration of dealers in high-end vintage watches.

This magnificent 19th-century building opened in 1892 and is regarded as an emblematic of the city. Teatro Campoamor is also the venue for the annual Prince of Asturias prize ceremony and for the city’s annual opera season and the Zarzuela music festival. The theatre’s elegant interior was influenced by the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid and is opulently decorated in scarlet, gold and red. On the first floor you can find the statue of Ramón de Campoamor, the Asturian poet after whom the theatre is named.
