The town square of Paralimni is dominated by the metropolitan, three-aisled church, dedicated to St George, the patron saint of the town. The church was finished in 1966 in a traditional Byzantine style and is full of contemporary frescoes. The impressive fresco which decorates the dome depicts the “All Powerful” surrounded by the Archangels, the Prophets and numerous saints. The gothic church of St George is located next to the metropolitan church in the main square of Paralimni. According to a marble inscription, it was erected in 1859 in the place of an older Byzantine church, parts of which have been incorporated in this one. Part of its northern wall is covered with a large fresco depicting St George killing a dragon.

Take a break from Porto Santo’s dry west at Quinta das Palmeiras, a little oasis of lush gardens and a mini zoo. Spot peacocks strutting past palm trees, parrots squawking overhead, and swans and ducks floating lazily across the ponds. A perfect stop for families or anyone looking for a change of scenery.

Built to commemorate the coup of 1994, the unmissable cream-colored structure is a great vantage point from which to take in Banjul in its entirety. There is a small museum on its second floor, containing traditional Gambian crafts, artwork, clothing, and even historic weaponry.

The Oceano Train Depot has been converted into a museum, but it was once a bustling stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad line. Commercial and transportation activities took place from the hub of the Oceano Train Depot from 1904 until the 1950s.
