Separated from Laganas by a 5-kilometre stretch of beach designated as part of the National Marine Park (and as such, free of buildings), Kalamaki is less raucous than its near neighbour and certainly more appealing to families and couples. It shares the same marvellous sands and striking views, and it is very close to the airport.

This world class zoo features 18,000 animals from 700 different species on 90 acres, including an Insectarium, Children's Zoo, Penguin & Puffin Coast and a Zooline Railroad. Set in the rolling hills, lakes and glades of Forest Park, the Saint Louis Zoo is a family favorite. Free to the public.

To immerse yourself into China's age-old tea tradition, visit the Longjing Tea Fields (or any of the other tea fields further to the west). Longjing is an exquisite variety of tea native to the region, and visitors will get a chance to sample the noble drink during a tea ceremony.

Val d’Orcia conjures up everything you picture when you think of Tuscany—rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and quiet hill towns. It’s a protected UNESCO site, partly because of the landscape, partly because of how little it’s changed over the centuries. Pienza is the standout—it was designed as the 'ideal city' during the Renaissance and still feels unusually well put together. The Abbey of Sant’Antimo is a peaceful stop, tucked into the countryside. And if you're into wine, this is Brunello country—some of the best reds in Italy. Even just driving through is half the experience.
