Getterön is a nature reserve that encompasses an area of 3.5 square kilometres, including parts of the Getterön peninsula. It's mainly popular due to its exceptional bird watching opportunities, providing hiding spots and observation positions that allow visitors to get up close to the birds without disturbing them. During spring and autumn, large numbers of species regularly breed or nest here. In addition to the permanent bird residents in Getterön, a large number of temporary guests flock to the area, contributing to a remarkable total of 336 recorded species in the region.

The National Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals from nearly 400 species — everything from elephants and lions to smaller exhibits you can explore at your own pace. Highlights include the Giant Panda Habitat and Amazonia, an indoor rainforest with monkeys, fish, and tropical plants. The grounds are expansive, so wear good shoes and plan a few hours if you want to see more than just the main enclosures.

The Santa Fe Trail was a transportation route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri, with Santa Fe, New Mexico, during the 19th century. In 1821, the Santa Fe Trail became America's first international commercial highway, becoming one of the nation's great routes of adventure and western expansion for nearly six decades afterwards. Congress recognized the significance of the Trail to American history by proclaiming it a National Historic Trail in 1987. Now visitors and locals can partake in its amazing history.
