Explore Egypt’s long story at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the first museum in the country and the Arab world to showcase the full range of Egyptian civilisation’s richness and diversity. Don’t skip the Royal Mummies Hall, where you’ll find actual mummies of some famous pharaohs. It’s a bit eerie but totally worth a look.

On the south-east coast of the Lavezzi Islands, a short boat ride from Bonifacio lies Merouville, or as its known in scuba diving circles, Grouper city. Here you can dive surrounded by shoals of the friendly fish whilst floating past red gorgonians and other bioluminescent underwater fauna. Several companies rent out boats and organise tours from Bonifacio harbour.

Security is of concern at present and trips to the Khyber Pass are best left for a better time (check official safety advice at your planned time of travel), but do seize the opportunity when the opportunity comes. The pass has long been a gateway to South Asia (part of the ancient Silk Route), travelled by merchants, explorers and conquerors, the likes of Alexander the Great and Mughals, a channel that now connects Pakistan to the troubled Afghan territories via Torkham.
