The Museum of Applied Arts is a branch of the National Museum in Poznan. It is located on the Przemysl Hill, in the very heart of the city of Poznan. The castle tower which is 43 meters high, offers a unique view of the city and its surroundings. In the space of 1500 m² in the joint buildings of the Przemysł Castle and Raczyński’s edifice, a new exhibition, devoted entirely to the applied art, is presented. It is the only such place in Poland. Amongst 2000 objects arranged in a unique way, one can find furniture, ceramics, glass and metal, weapons, jewellery, fabrics, costumes and accessories. The museum presents applied art from Middle Ages until modern times.

Hop aboard the Flying Dutchman to witness the Netherlands from the skies in one of the oldest commercial aircrafts in the world. Then, set sail to New Amsterdam whilst reining fire on enemy ships. Skip forward a century or two to save the country from flooding by damming the Dutch banks. Madurodam incorporates cutting-edge technology and innovative designs to showcase the Netherlands’ greatest achievements and plans for a better future.

If you’ve got a day to spare, spend it exploring Egypt’s second city by the sea. Alexandria feels like a world apart from Cairo — cooler, breezier, and full of Mediterranean character. Wander through Roman ruins, stroll the corniche, check out the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and stop by the Citadel of Qaitbay. It’s an easy change of pace, with plenty of history, sea views, and fresh air.

Just behind the ruins of Memphis, this 8-metre-long statue was carved from a single block of alabaster. It’s smaller than the Giza Sphinx but still impressive up close. No one’s entirely sure who it represents — maybe Hatshepsut or Amenhotep II — which just adds to the mystery. It’s a quick stop, but worth it if you’re already in the area.
