Since opening more than 80 years ago, the Detroit Zoo has been a leader in innovative animal care and conservation. It was the first zoo in the U.S. to introduce ‘bar-less’ exhibits, using natural barriers like moats to give animals a more comfortable, open environment. Today, it’s home to over 2,000 animals, including 50 endangered species and two species extinct in the wild. Don’t miss the Arctic Ring of Life, where you can walk through a clear tunnel surrounded by swimming polar bears and seals—a must-see for all ages.

Skulpturparken, which is located in the former hospital compound in Umedalen, is considered to be one of Europe’s most distinguished sculpture parks and is also one of Västerbottens most visited sites in the summer. More than 150 Swedish and international artists has since the start in 1994 exhibited their works in Umedalen Skulptur, an exhibition that is organized every summer. Today there are also 26 permanent works in the park. Skulpturparken also has a garden landscape in connection with the IKSU Spa, Umeå’s so-called cultural spa. The garden is created by one of Sweden’s famous landscaping artists, Ulf Nordfjell.

Saint Martin's Cathedral is a Gothic church with several chapels. It was consecrated in 1452. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian kings and 8 queens were crowned here. The cathedral tower rises to a height of 85 metres and is topped off by a gold-plated replica of the royal Hungarian crown.
