Piazza Vittorio is the main square of the city, and the biggest in Europe completely surrounded by arcades. The permanent exhibition at Chania Archaeological Museum tells the story of Crete's history with multiple well-preserved exhibits, which include mosaics, jewellery, coins, sculptures, and other artifacts. The building itself served as a prison, cinema, and ammunition warehouse at different times.

Both the identity of its builder and the stunning physics of its construction - there were no supports holding it as it spirals into the choir loft - remain a mystery. Legend says that St. Joseph himself made it, as the man who did build the staircase disappeared before the nuns were able to pay him, and the wood used was not native to the area.
