In 1887, Henning Hammarlund founded 'Halda Fickursfabrik', a pocket watch factory in the town of Svängsta, just outside of Karlshamn. The Swedish-made watches were sought after worldwide and were manufactured in the same building until the 1940s. Just over three decades later, the old factory was transformed into one of Sweden's most distinguished industrial museums. With hundreds of rescued animals, the sanctuary has been home to the island's donkeys since 1993, often saving their lives by adopting them straight from the street. Learn about the Sami way of life at Njarka Sami Camp, located on a peninsula in Häggsjön. The camp has several different types of huts, while a special octagonal hut, called Jarnge, is the centre of Njarka and the venue for special occasions like weddings and christenings. In addition to learning about Sami history, visitors can also feed the reindeer some lichen, sleep in a traditional Sami fashion, and try their hand at lasso throwing.

The Menelik Palace is a palatial compound that was the seat of the power of Emperors of Ethiopia. Today, the compound is called Unity Park and contains are several residences, halls, chapels, and working buildings. Visit the Gibr Adarash banquet hall, the Zufan Adarash throne room, the mausoleum that is Emperor Menelik II's last resting place, and the Shengo Hall event hall. The Prime Minister's Office and residence is located here, too, which means that security is pretty strict — bring an ID.
