Flamenco is a passionate, rhythmical dance drawing on folkloric music traditions from Southern Spain. Generally accompanied by special musical instruments, this is a vibrant form of art unique to the region. Numerous providers offer Flamenco experiences in all manner of locations. If you are in Sacramonte, make sure to catch a flamenco show at Zambra María la Canastera: performed in a tiny restored cave home laden with memorabilia. In the city centre, try El Tabanco for a reasonably priced Flamenco evening completed with wine and tapas. For a high end cultural experience, head to Casa del Arte.

This historic district made up of traditional wooden Malay houses on stilts will not be around for much longer, as pressure mounts on landowners to sell their properties to make way for new urban development. For now; however, you can still wander through and catch a glimpse of what KL's outskirts of the early 1900 looked like, complete with chickens and livestock roaming around, and all manner of street food cooked up along alleyways. Kamoung Baru hosts a weekly night market that sells clothing and handicrafts.

Purana Quila (Old Fort), a massive fortress with three gateways, is located on the ancient part of the city and it allegedly stands on the site of the legendary city of Indraprastha, mentioned in the Mahabharata Hindu text. The fort was completed by the ruler Sher Shah in the mid-16th century.

This beautiful example of Moorish-inspired architecture was built in 1910. The minarets, arches and spirals make it one of the most attractive historic buildings in the capital. It still operates as one of the city's railway stations.
