The Royal Footsteps Along the Kona Coast Byway covers 700 years of history. The seven-mile stretch of road takes you through the centuries of Hawaii’s Alii, or the ruling class. You will be led past four of Kona's seven “Royal Centers,” which were the sacred locations chosen due to an abundance of natural resources and recreational value. These centers were reserved for the kings and queens of Hawaii. Count among them Hulihee Palace (one of three palaces in the United States), the royal surfing grounds of Kahaluu, Hawaii’s oldest Christian church and several heiau, or sites of sacred Hawaiian temples.

This hiking trail can be a bit challenging, but adventurers will be rewarded with a unique experience. A descent through lush rainforest leads to a valley of a solid, yet still steaming lava lake. The scenery of the Kīlauea Iki Crater is barren and desolate, but eerily beautiful.

Fur, feathers, fine food and family fun — Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is full of little surprises! There are lots of native furry friends and cuddly nursery animals, mini golf, train rides, playgrounds and barbecues. There's rabbit petting, face painting, a treehouse, and a reptile display including the local Brown Snake and Death Adder. All safe behind glass, of course. Visit the crocodile exhibit and cuddle a croc. Treat yourself to breakfast or lunch with some great local coffee and delicious food. Enjoy pancakes, homemade cakes and cookies. Specialties include macadamia baked cheesecake and their famous beef burger infused with macadamia nuts. The shop on the premises offers a wide range of gourmet macadamia products and tastings of hot, roasted nuts. There's a fascinating gift shop and a full display of the macadamia nut industry.

Igidae Coastal Walk makes for a wonderful hike along the shore of the Sea of Japan. The path itself is of moderate difficulty, with some parts featuring pedestrian bridges and others running directly through natural terrain. The entire path is about 4km long and should take about 2 hours to complete in its entirety, but there are access points along the way which you can use to cut through to a nearby bus stop. The trail can be done both north to south and vice versa, although heading north is reportedly easier and comes with an added bonus of finishing the hike at the scenic Oryukdo Skywalk, standing on a see-through platform and looking down onto the rocky shore.
