An extensive labyrinth of underground passageways and cellar vaults has existed in the bedrock of castle hill for centuries - the Historic Rock-Cut Cellars. As early as 1380 red beer was stored in the subterranean cellars, sometimes comprising four levels, that had been cut into the Burgsandstein (local Nuremberg sandstone).
