Cheong Fatt Tze, the Blue Mansion, was one of the wealthiest merchants of the 19th century, and Penang Straits Settlement imported artisans from China to build this opulent 38-room mansion. With its five courtyards, carved woodwork, Gothic louvered windows and cast iron, the mansion is a fascinating fusion of East and West culture. The building was restored at a cost of 7.6 million ringgit, and it is crammed with sculptures, antique furniture and tapestries, while now being a unique boutique hotel. However, it is also open for non-residents during guided tours, so book one ahead.

Ronneby has the beautiful Brunnspark but also a cultural treasure— Bergslagen. A real neighbourhood with buildings and street structures dating back to the Middle Ages. Here, you can stroll in cultural-historical environments along narrow winding alleys behind the Holy Cross church with its vast collection of Renaissance art. There’s also a home-built museum and art exhibitions at Ronneby Cultural Center in the area.

Stroll along Mandraki Harbour for unbeatable views and a brush with legend. This charming harbour — adorned with iconic deer statues and medieval windmills — is the reputed home of the Colossus of Rhodes. Standing at 34 metres, this bronze tribute to the Greek sun-god Helios was a marvel of its time, crafted by Chares of Lindos in 280 BC.

Yanbu's small historic district, with its traditional scenes and views, is located northwest of the city centre, now separated from the sea by the port. The 19th century buildings in the area may be a bit run down, but the Lawrence residence and historic wall stand out as memorable highlights.
