This beautiful example of Spanish colonial architecture contains a small museum dedicated to the Spanish Inquisition's brutal persecution of heretics once carried out in these very chambers. Visitors can still see some of the torture devices used to extract confessions of heresy and witchcraft, along with some of the questions used in "witch" interrogations, which are still displayed on the museum wall. Needless to say, no prisoner could hope to be acquitted of their purported crimes against the Catholic Church, and most met their tragic end at the very guillotine still on display in the courtyard.

Standing on the right bank of the Grand Canal, Ca' Rezzonico is one of the most magnificent buildings in the whole city, as well as a remarkable example of 18th-century Venetian baroque and rococo architecture. It was completed in 1756 and today serves as a public museum with an interesting display of 18th-century Venetian artefacts, including furniture, paintings, and sculptures.

The Sursock Museum of Modern Art occupies the villa once inhabited by its founder, Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock, who instructed successors to turn the building into an art museum. The will was well-executed: the Sursock Museum is now among Beirut's most attractive, with free entry and guided tours. Its namesake palace is closed to the public, but certainly worth a look.

Often found on postcards of The Hague, the three windmills of Leidschendam are a short bike ride out from the city centre and worth a visit to experience the emblematic Dutch countryside. Several picturesque bike routes take you past typical farms and even a petting zoo, where you may come across some friendly highland cows en route. Alternatively, there is also a tram that leaves from The Hague's city centre and arrives less than half an hour later in Leidschendam where you can experience a more traditional Dutch lifestyle away from the bustle of the city.
