In case there wasn't enough to do in Monastir, the next port up has plenty to offer in the way of rare archaeological finds and exciting history which can be discovered in the Sousse Archaeological Museum or the Museum Dar Essid. The city of Sousse, similar to Monastir, exhibits some important ancient structures that remain intact today. The Ribat in Sousse is a bit smaller than that of Monastir and perhaps not as impressive, but it is inexpensive to enter and visitors can climb the tower right to the top to appreciate the expansive views of the city from above. The Medina is nearby and contains the main Mosque of the city as well as a bustling souk complete with passionate traders who will test your haggling skills. Be careful of rogue traders and pickpockets in busy areas such as these and be mindful of offers made by unlicensed operators. Getting to Sousse from Monastir is very easy to do, just hop on the bus or train from the city centre and in about half an hour you'll be there.

The baroque "Chapel of Merchants, Shopkeepers and Bankers" was built at the end of the 1600s. This lesser known architectural jewel still holds numerous original artworks. The most noteworthy of them is the Perpetual Calendar built by the engineering Giovanni Plana — a primitive computing machine that allows its user to look up details about any date between the years 1 and 4000. Powered by a small wooden crank, the intricate gears and chains put into motion the nine inscribed cylinders, The chapel is only open to the public on the weekends, when mass is held. If you are lucky, you can attend the occasional classical music concert and experience the building's impressive acoustics.

With its towers, buttresses and sturdy walls, the 16th-century Cathedral was built to serve as a place of worship and defence against the pirate raids from North Africa. The cathedral's Gothic interior comprises three naves and three chapels. Daily guided tours offer visitors the opportunity to explore the entire cathedral.

Estimated to be over 800 years old, the Ancient Dragon Tree of Icod de los Vinos presents a unique chance to see and touch such an incredibly old living specimen of Dracaena Drago, which is known for being the protector of the islands. This colossal tree is 16 metres tall and it has a width of 20 metres. Despite facing a threat due to the immense tourism it attracted, the Dragon Tree Park is currently open to visitors thanks to the efforts to conserve and restore the park's biodiversity. It is possible to visit the park on your own, or you can book a guided tour. If you decide to visit Tenerife, you can't miss this great treasure of the Canarian flora.
