The town square of Paralimni is dominated by the metropolitan, three-aisled church, dedicated to St George, the patron saint of the town. The church was finished in 1966 in a traditional Byzantine style and is full of contemporary frescoes. The impressive fresco which decorates the dome depicts the “All Powerful” surrounded by the Archangels, the Prophets and numerous saints. The gothic church of St George is located next to the metropolitan church in the main square of Paralimni. According to a marble inscription, it was erected in 1859 in the place of an older Byzantine church, parts of which have been incorporated in this one. Part of its northern wall is covered with a large fresco depicting St George killing a dragon.

Well-known events and festivals create a vibrant and colourful atmosphere all over the island. One of the brightest events is the Carnival, taking place in February and March in all towns. The Flower Festival, which occurs every May, celebrates the beauty of spring with a floral exhibition boasting the rich variety of Cyprus’ authentic wild flora. Athletic events such as Regattas, cycling races, the Cyprus Rally, the international Open Marathon, beach volley tournaments and sporting events with competitions in boxing, karate, triathlon, marathon, shooting, rhythmic gymnastics and cycling are just a few of the annual athletic events that take place in every corner of Cyprus.

Tucked into the Akamas Peninsula’s rugged coastline, the Baths of Aphrodite — a mossy grotto where water trickles into a shallow pool — feels more like a quiet woodland chapel than a grand spa. According to legend, this was where the goddess bathed and first locked eyes with Adonis. The site’s magic lies in its simplicity: a single ancient fig tree drapes shade over the spring, its roots tangled in the rocks like something from a Pre-Raphaelite painting. Practicalities are well managed: a car park, clean toilets, and a no-frills café sit near the entrance, while the Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe (15 minutes’ drive) adds context for mythology buffs. Come early to beat the coach tours; dawn light through the fig leaves makes the grotto glow.

The Mörrum River is renowned worldwide for its exceptional salmon fishing, drawing enthusiasts from both near and far.
