Wyck has often been described as the up-and-coming part of Maastricht. Even though it’s still a dynamic area in development, it’s already seen a real transformation from ten years ago. Today, it’s hard to imagine that there was a time that this side of the Meuse was dismissed as ‘outside Maastricht,’ and the people of Wyck were considered bumpkins. On weekdays Wyck is bustling with business from the train station to the river, and on weekends it is just as jumping, with the tourists and day visitors tarrying here to ‘warm up’ for a day out on the town. Whether you decide to take a walk on the river banks or to book a cruise, which you can combine with lunch on board, the Garonne offers plenty of sights for a delightful afternoon or early evening. One company that offers cruising activities in the city is Les Bateaux Toulousains and they have three boats located at Port de la Daurade, Port de l'Embouchure and Port Saint-Sauveur.

The House of Slaves is a museum and memorial to the Atlantic slave trade on Gorée Island. The Door of No Return memorialises the final exit point of the slaves from Africa. Though the exact number of slaves who actually departed from here is debated, a visit is an important and solemn experience.

Port-Louis is a small and charming fishing village in the north of Grande-Terre, dotted with brightly-colored houses. The area is also home to Plage du Souffleur, one of the most spectacular beaches in the country.
