Dominating the city, this cathedral symbolises the rich religious past of the city and gives an indirect insight of the muted power struggle between Calvinism and Catholism. The Visitation Basilica protects the bodies of Saint Joan of Chantal and Saint Francis of Sales, as well as a 38-ton chime, named Marie-Francoise.

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is a Roman Catholic cathedral also listed as a national monument by the French government. It houses an organ that was built between 1840 and 1842 by Nicolas-Antoine Lété, an organ builder of the French king. A lot of concerts are organised there, especially in summer.

Hakata Machiya Folk Museum offers interactive displays which showcase the life and times of the Meiji era (1868-1912). This is the place to visit if you want to learn more about the life and culture of Hakata.

The large market square located at the heart of the city centre is surrounded by a multitude of must-see sights. The daily market takes place here, where you can buy all sorts of tasty treats, flowers and spices. The ornate Beautiful Fountain is a well-photographed sight. The two rings on the fence are the focus of much attention. A legend says that if you turn the “golden ring” and make a wish, it will come true. The black ring, meanwhile, is said to bless women with children. The main market square is characterised by the facade of the Chruch of Our Lady constructed as an imperial royal chapel. Every day at noon the "Männleinlaufen" (mechanical clock and glockenspiel) takes place here - a daily event not to be missed!
