The historical Centralia Union Depot was built in 1912 as a transportation center, gathering place and landmark. All original exterior and interior structure is still maintained: the red bricks, woodwork, tiling, and oak benches remain. Today the Union Depot is served by Amtrak, acting a midpoint between Kelso and Olympia.

At Gantheaume Point you can view dinosaur footprints at low tides: they are believed to be more that 130 million years old. Here you can also witness the vivid red sandstone cliffs spilling into the sea. Relax in Anastasia’s Pool – a natural sea bath, modified by a former lighthouse keeper, to make it easy for his wife, Anastasia, to access. Anastasia suffered badly from arthritis and found relief in the warm water of the Indian Ocean which filled the pool at high tide. The man-made structure has been largely destroyed by a storm in 2014, but the romantic story keeps touching the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

Let’s face it, you are not going to find any of Matisse’s greatest works here. They are all in the USA. On the other hand, there is a clear picture of the artistic genius’ development, from his sickbed as a young man to his grave behind the museum. After a visit, you can walk around in the painter’s footsteps and compare the light in each painting. In addition, the red ochre villa is beautiful in its own right.
