Joshua Tree National Park is where the Mojave meets the Colorado desert, an otherworldly crossroads where two contrasting landscapes merge into something truly unique. Named for its quirky, twisted Joshua trees, the park is a wonderland of rugged rock formations, open desert vistas, and breathtaking night skies perfect for stargazing. Beyond the trees, you’ll find a mix of desert ecosystems, each with its own plants, wildlife, and scenic trails. Hidden Valley is a popular spot for beginner hikers, while those looking for a bit of a climb can tackle the boulders at Barker Dam. For the best views, take a drive up to Keys View, where, on a clear day, you can see the Salton Sea and even as far as Mexico.

The Almaden Quicksilver County Park is one of San Jose’s natural gems. The biodiversity is accompanied by a rich history of over 135 years and 4,152 acres. Wildflower displays, over 34.3 miles of hiking trails, 10 miles of biking trails and 23 miles of equestrian trails make Almaden Quicksilver the perfect getaway. The park is also pet-friendly and open to dog walking, as long as dogs are leashed. Ranger guided tours and walks are available.

Fun for the family with children can be had at the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, where children are encouraged to interact with and explore our world. There are 150 exhibits in the 52,000-square-foot museum covering themes of creativity, community and learning. Programs also run daily, providing more focused activities and interactions for children.

Now here's an experience hard to come by elsewhere: the Rastafari Indigenous Village, just outside city limits, is a neat introduction to Jamaica's indigenous religious movement that has gained followers worldwide since its emergence in the 1930s. A guided tour is good way to learn more about Rastafarianism and its central tenants, as well as witness the daily and cultural life of its Jamaican adepts.
