Dr Sun Yat-sen was one of the pioneers at the forefront in the struggle to transform China from a dynastic feudal state to a republic for the people. He continues to be celebrated and the plan of his mausoleum is in the shape of an alarm bell, signifying the “perpetual ringing of the alarm bell to arouse people”. Dr Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum is a classic building of the architectural style used during the early days of the Republic of China.

Located across from the mainland town of La Guaira, Isla Grande offers crystal clear waters, coral reefs, and white sandy beaches. Despite the small size of the island, there are many little hotels and restaurants, catering to most budgets. The island offers great opportunities for snorkeling and practicing all kinds of water sports, like surfing at the famous surf break near the Sister Moon hotel (caution is advised as the spot requires some expertise and knowledge of the coral reef). Built into the hillside at the end of the 1st century BC, this Roman theatre was restored in the 1800s. The ruins give a sense of how grand it once was. Nearby, there’s a small museum with local artefacts and statues. Don’t miss the view from up here—it’s one of the nicer spots to look out over Verona.

King George I Square is the central civic and social hub of Patras, laid out in the mid-19th century as part of the city's post-independence grid plan. The spacious square is defined by its two Danish-made fountains and surrounded by neoclassical architecture, most notably the Apollon Theatre. Cafés and restaurants line its perimeter, making it a prime spot for people-watching. It remains the primary venue for public gatherings, demonstrations, and key events of the famous Patras Carnival, continuing its long tradition as the city's main stage.
