The Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (MALBA) is one of the country's, and perhaps the continent's, premier art museums, boasting astonishing collections and temporary exhibitions. One of the main draws is the enormous 19th and 20th century Latin American exhibit, but be sure to check out the cinema and the wonderful gift shop, as well.

Cheong Fatt Tze, the Blue Mansion, was one of the wealthiest merchants of the 19th century, and Penang Straits Settlement imported artisans from China to build this opulent 38-room mansion. With its five courtyards, carved woodwork, Gothic louvered windows and cast iron, the mansion is a fascinating fusion of East and West culture. The building was restored at a cost of 7.6 million ringgit, and it is crammed with sculptures, antique furniture and tapestries, while now being a unique boutique hotel. However, it is also open for non-residents during guided tours, so book one ahead.

Though it was once a busy shipyard where European immigrants settled after coming in search of work, this colourful and vibrant neighbourhood has developed into a fashionable centre for trendy galleries and boutiques. Tourists flock here to snap a shot of the colourful Caminito, where painted metal shacks reflect the area's past, and to pay a visit to one of football's most legendary stadiums.

The Naval Museum is considered one of the most important naval museums in the world, containing a variety of historical items from the staggering history of the Spanish Navy. The most famous exhibit is the Mappa Mundi, dating back to 1500. The exhibits are displayed in chronological order and feature a treasure trove of figureheads, paintings, and naval charts.
