Matsuyama Castle stands on a large, wooded hill right in the middle of town, with an extensive moat and earth ramparts that dominate the city centre. Unlike many Japanese castles that were destroyed and rebuilt of concrete, Matsuyama Castle remains in its original state of wood and plaster. The castle offers spectacular views of the city, mountains and sea, particularly from the top of the keep. Matsuyama Castle houses a fascinating collection of samurai weapons and armour, and information about the history and structure of the castle.

On the large island of Basse-Terre, about half an hour from Pointe-a-Pitre, is the beautiful Guadeloupe National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The park has over 300 kilometers of hiking trails through lush vegetation, imposing mountains and volcanoes, and a wide array of flora and fauna, including 100 species of orchid and 11 different kinds of bats.

Steinfjellet provides an absolutely fantastic panoramic view of the city and surrounding area. Rest your eyes on Haugesund and the North Sea from a height of 227 metres above sea level.

In 2013 Nantes became the first French town to be awarded the title of European Green Capital. This European award is the recognition of many years of political will that encompasses urban development and mobility (tramway, busway, etc.), fighting against global warming and preserving the natural heritage around the Loire estuary.
