In 1964, four businessmen conceived of the idea of creating a physical manifestation of the city's gratitude to God. As one result of this project, Thanks-Giving Square has been established. The square is decorated with fountains, a bell tower and the beautiful Chapel of Thanks-Giving, open to adepts of all faiths.

For any visit to Kyōto, a stop at Nishiki Market is a must. The over 400-year-old market with its 126 stalls is a foodie haven. All sorts of scents and flavours, from the sweet savouriness of tamagoyaki (the Japanese rolled omelette) to the fried treats, to the acidic tanginess of tsukemono (pickled goods), fill the thriving narrow shopping street. Besides the delicacies, the market is also famous for kitchen paraphernalia and tools, such as the acclaimed hand-crafted knives of Aritsugu. Fun fact: almost all edibles sold here are served on sticks.

Brixton's Electric Avenue got its name for being the first market street in London to be lit with electric lights. Today, the avenue is a diverse and eclectic food market, mostly specialising in African and Caribbean cuisine. Apart from the food, the area attracts bargain hunters in search of cameras, audio equipment, all manner of household goods, hair and beauty products and services, wigs, fishmongers, butchers, bakers, fruit and flower shops — you name it. Brixton Village is a covered arcaded area of the market that brims with quirky shops, fruit and vegetable stands, and a plethora of cafés and restaurants. Brixton Academy is an iconic venue that hosts some of the biggest rock and pop acts in the world. The venue was originally opened as a theatre and cinema called the Astoria, but has since evolved into a concert venue: Madonna, Sex Pistols and The Smiths have all performed here.

If you’re up for a bit of a hike (or a bus ride), San Miniato sits above Piazzale Michelangelo and has some of the best views over Florence, without the crowds. The church itself is one of the oldest in the city, boasting a distinct Romanesque style and a peaceful, yet slightly eerie, crypt worth exploring. It’s also where Florence’s first martyr, Saint Minias, is said to be buried.
