Bahrain's grand mosque, named after the founder of the country, is a sight to behold. It's one of the largest mosques in the world, accommodating 7,000 worshipers and containing a library with many ancient volumes. Its precious materials were brought from all over the world and processed by local craftspeople. Visitors have been endlessly fascinated by the huge domes and the beautiful calligraphy ornamenting the walls. Guided tours are available in both English and Arabic.

The Alcazaba of Badajoz is the city's historic fortress that once served as the home of the Taifa kings. As the city's former defensive structure, it is surrounded by several towers, as well as the Guadiana River, much to the visual delight of visitors.

Dating back to 1132 under the reign of Norman King Roger II, Castello Normanno-Svevo is a true architectural testament to history. Although it endured destruction in 1156 by King William I of Sicily, it was resurrected and fortified in 1233 under the patronage of the Holy Roman emperor Frederick II. Over time, it saw various transformations during the Angevin domination, and after being held by several noble families, it eventually became a prison and barracks under the King of Naples. Encircled by a moat on all sides, except its northern border with the sea, accessible via a bridge and gate to the south, the castle primarily features Aragon walls and the prominent Hohenstaufen tower. Today, it serves as a venue for exhibitions, preserving a rich tapestry of history within its walls.

About 35 km from Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion is a medieval town set in the heart of one of the world’s oldest wine regions — and the first to be listed as a living UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s small, walkable, and packed with history, from old stone streets and monolithic churches to underground catacombs carved into the limestone. Of course, the wine is a big draw. You can visit nearby châteaux for tastings or just grab a glass in the town square.
